Being a freshman in college, it’s hard to always have my
life together at every moment. I don’t always know what I want or what exactly
I want to pursue. It’s completely normal, I know, because asking any 18 year
old what their future will look like and what they want to be doing is a pretty
difficult question to answer. I’ve learned over the past semester and couple of
weeks that I’ve been back that no matter what you want to be doing with your
life later on, it’s always important to keep an open mind to all the
possibilities in store. As a journalism major, I’m unsure exactly of which
specific route I want to take, the broadcast or print side. I found it extremely
important to take advantage of every opportunity OU has to offer me, especially
regarding my major. Along with my blog, I intern for OU Nightly, OU’s broadcast
show, where I’ve been learning things I would’ve never have before. I write for
The Odyssey, where college students are open to write about whatever they would
like. And finally, I just got accepted in to the News Academy for OU Daily, the
school’s newspaper. It’s definitely a lot, but I really utilize the opportunities
available because I know gaining experience will really help me in the end in
my career and lead me to discover what it is that I truly am passionate about. My
biggest advice for someone who doesn’t quite know what path they want to follow
within their major, or even which major to pursue at all, is to get involved.
Meet people, create connections, and join clubs and organizations. This is what
I’ve been doing and it’s helped me tremendously in discovering who I am and
what it is I want to do with my life. Even if getting involved doesn’t lead you
to the path you want right away, it’s a big step in the right direction.
